Norma Benner Christensen, age 81, of Mount Prospect, IL passed away on November 19, 2018, surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of Robert Christensen, loving mother of Laura (Nathan) Richey, and cherished grandmother of Andrew and Jackson Richey.

Born in New Albany, IN, Norma grew up in Mt. Vernon, IN and was a proud graduate of Purdue University (Boiler Up!)

She returned to Mt. Vernon to teach at Mt. Vernon High School before pursuing a Masters degree at Southern Illinois University. Upon graduation, Norma took a job teaching Home Economics at Maine West High School in Des Plaines, IL. where she taught for 32 years until her retirement in 1995.

The consummate home economics teacher, Norma loved to cook and bake. Sharing her famous cookies and strawberry rhubarb jam with friends and family brought her great joy. Books and New York Times crossword puzzles littered her nightstand. She was an avid reader, bridge player, and life-long learner. One of her greatest joys was walking and spending time with her dog, Henry, who was her companion to the end.

A celebration of Norma’s life will be organized next spring.

Memorials in Norma’s name can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O. Box 98018, Washington D.C. 20090-801.
